Rear Easements:  In many cases the rear portion of a property has an easement that runs along the back of the lot.  This easement can be anywhere from 5 to 20 feet, and no permanent structures can be built in this area.  Various utilities such as electric, telephone, and cable companies can use this easement to run underground wires for services.  Take a look at your plat of survey to identify and locate the rear easement line.

Side Easements:  Similar to rear easements, side easements can be used by utility companies to run wiring through your backyard.  Your plat of survey will typically indicate these easements with a dashed line running parallel to the property lines and may be labeled with the abbreviation U.E. (utility easement).

Floodplain:  This is a flat area near a river, stream, pond, or lake that provides water retention in the case of a flood.  Although not always indicated on a plat of survey,  this is an important area to be aware of when planning your swimming pool design and placement.  As a general rule, no permanent structures can be built within a floodplain without significant engineering work to redirect any flood water that might otherwise accumulate in the area.

Distance from Residence:  Many people don’t realize that your pool needs to be located a minimum distance from your home.  Some municipalities require a specfic distance to the house- others specify a minimum amount of decking around the pool area.  Either way, keep in mind that the pool placement will need to conform to local building codes and minimum distances.  Contact your local building department for specifics on where the pool can and can’t be located in relation to your home.

As you can see there are many factors to consider when planning a pool.  The first and most important thing to do is locate a scaled copy of your plat of survey.  It is important that the plat is to scale so that new structures such as the pool, decking and patio can be shown with the same proportions as the rest of the property.  When meeting with a pool designer it will be extremely helpful to have this document available and the sales person can help determine the best location for your new in ground pool.  If you have any questions about specific pool location, plat of survey, or to schedule a sales appointment, please contact us or call us directly at 630.845.1145.

Every year around this time customers all over the Midwest prepare to have their swimming pools opened for the season.  And, inevitably, every year we receive calls from customers asking questions on how to successfully prepare their pool for the coming summer.  From proper water level to auto-cover and chemical questions, people sometime need a ‘refresher’ on the in’s and out’s of opening and maintaining a beautiful swimming pool from year to year.  Here are a few pointers to get you started on the right foot:

1. Remove all standing water and debris from your pool cover.  As obvious as this might sound, we can’t count the number of times a customer has asked us to open their pool….and the cover is FILLED with standing water and leaves from the fall and winter months.  Before a pool cover can be removed (or retracted, in the case of auto-covers) it is imperative that all water and debris is first removed.  Our winter covers come with a permeable mesh that allows rainwater and melted snow and ice to drain through.  Leaves and branched need to be cleared before removing the cover.  Auto-covers do not have a permeable membrane.  These covers need to be pumped clear of all water before the cover will operate.  Leaves and branches must also be removed before the cover is operated.  If not, this debris will collect in the cover box and can damage the cover system.

2.  Bring the water level in the pool half way up the skimmer.  This is not a critical step but something to keep in mind, especially if you have an auto-cover.  The cover is designed to be supported by the pool water underneth it.  By having the water at the appropriate level, the cover can operate smoothly and easily as the pool is being started up for  the season.

3.  Even under perfect conditions there will be some sort of dirt or debris in the bottom of your pool.  If you have a winter cover, the snow and ice that collected over the winter has now melted into the pool, bringing with it a fair amount of dirt.  If you have an auto-cover with your pool, a few leaves may have blown into the pool through a small gap between the cover and pool wall.  In either case be prepared to spend a little time removing or vacuuming this debris once the water is circulating.

4. Initial chemical balancing for the season is not a particularly difficult process, especially with a fiberglass pool.  When your pool is first started up for the season you will most likely need to ‘shock’ the water in order to kill off any algae that has collected over the winter.  Once the first round of shock wears off, test your pool chemicals to see where everything is starting at for the year.  If you have specific questions about chemicals feel free to contact us or take a sample of water to a local pool store for analysis.

5.  If you have a salt water chlorine generator on your pool make sure to heat the water to 77 degrees before testing the salt level of the water.  The ideal level is 3500ppm (parts per million).  The sensor in your pool equipment is calibrated to read the salt level most accurately while at this water temperature.  A lower temperature will produce a false low reading and a higher water temperature will produce an inaccurately high reading.  For every 5 degree change from the 77 degree point, the salt level will read 200ppm different from actual levels.

This is a great question we get from time to time!  The short answer is yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind when installing an in-ground pool if you have an existing septic system  or private well on your property.

1.  Location, Location, Location:

Before you can determine where an in-ground pool can go, you will first need to determine where the existing septic tank and field is located, along with the well head (if applicable).  Your local municipality or county health department may be able to help by looking up the building records for your property.  They may find a septic survey, which will show the septic and well locations as build with the home.  If not, a local septic service company can be contacted to survey and locate the system on your property.

2. Septic Tank and Lines:

Many times customers will peer into the vastness of their yard and think “I’ve got PLENTY of room for a pool!”  While this can be the case, there are many instances when a septic field or tank will limit the available space and exact location of your new swimming pool.  As a general rule, (at least in Illinois)  the closest portion of the water’s edge cannot be any closer than 25′ to an existing septic line and 25′ to the septic tank.

2. Well Water:

In many cases a home with a septic system also has a private well on the property.  Generally speaking, in Illinois the swimming pool must be located a minimum distance to the well head.  This is usually not a problem, as most well heads are located in front yards, far away from the septic field or potential pool location, but keep this in mind when planning out your swimming pool project.  Contact your local health department for specific regulations in your area.

3. Relocating or Eliminating a Line:

Occasionally a customer will need a line to their septic field moved in order to accommodate the desired location of the pool.  Although this is not as common, it IS a possibility.  Alternatively, a line may be able to be eliminated all together, giving enough room to maintain the required distance from the septic field.  Contact your local septic installer for further information about this process.

1.  Property Lines-  Many municipalities require a swimming pool to be located a certain distance from a side or rear property line.  Make sure you mark out the property lines at your home to make sure a pool will fit. 

2. Utility and Drainage Easements-  Similar to property lines, easements are areas of your yard that you cannot build permanent structures within.  Utility companies can use this part of your yard to run underground electrical, phone, gas, and telephone lines for your home and the neighborhood.  Check your plat of survey to see where the easements are located on your property.  A swimming pool, deck, patio or equipment cannot be located in this area.  Contact your local municipality for more information on building restrictions and easements.

3. Impervious Lot Coverage-  Another restriction to consider is impervious lot coverage of your property.  Several cities, towns and counties in the Chicago land area and across the Midwest are imposing restrictions on the buildable area of your lot.  This restriction is in place to ensure rainwater and natural drainage is not disturbed or adversely effected by a construction project.  Contact your local building department to find out if impervious lot coverage is an issue in your town.

We get this question a lot, and there are a few reasons that a building permit is not only required, but a benefit to homeowners:

1. Liability- Having a building permit in place protects you as the homeowner from a number of liabilities throughout the project. What happens if someone gets hurt while working on your property? A building permit requires contractors to be licenced, insured, and bonded in many cases. If an injury or property damage were to occur, your pool builder’s insurance will cover the costs.

2. Inspections- Most municipal building departments have an inspector visit your home during the construction of your pool project. The inspector’s role is to examine and verify that your pool is being built to national and local safety standards. Some of the inspections include: underground plumbing, electric, and gas line, electrical bonding, and final pool/barrier.

3. Piece of Mind- Working with a reputable pool installer who is licenced, insured, and bonded can be a great step towards knowing you are getting the best possible installation of your new swimming pool. Stay away from contractors who insist that you don’t need a permit, or ask you to apply for the permit yourself. Many times these companies are not willing to comply with industry standards of construction or do not have proper liability insurance.

Recently, a customer shared with us the unfortunate news that their beloved family dog had wandered into the backyard unattended and fell into the swimming pool.  Although the dog was a special part of the family, she had lived a full 16 years and eventually suffered from loss of sight.  Due to her age and eye sight, the dog was unable to find its way out of the pool and unfortunately passed away as a result.

We at Signature Pools send our condolences to the family and would also like to take a moment to remind our customers just how serious pools safety should be taken.  Always be sure to keep all access points to the pool area closed and secure whenever an adult is not within eyesight of the entire pool surface.  A locking auto-cover can offer another layer of safety and protection for your family.  Not only will the cover prevent leaves and debris from blowing in the pool when closed,  but also prevents unauthorized access to the pool when locked.  Additionally, after-market pool safety devices can be purchased that will sound an audible alarm if the pool surface is disrupted.  Most importantly, teaching children about pool safety and the dangers of swimming without an adult present is the most effective way to ensure a safe swimming environment for the entire family.

Although our customer suffered the loss of a family pet, we are all reminded that the outcome could have been much worse if a child was left unattended by the pool.  The accident serves as a stern reminder that pool safety is a serious matter and needs to be treated as such.  But with safeguards in place, a backyard pool can serve as a great retreat and offer endless summers of family fun.

Barrington Pools, Inc is a builder of in ground, concrete swimming pools and has projects throughout the greater Chicago land area, Wisconsin and Indiana.  The construction of these types of pools requires a large amount of chemicals to be added to the water and poses a storage and disposal problem for companies dealing with hazardous or caustic materials.

Signature Pools has mailed out the 2010 Pool Closing Letter to our existing and previous clients.  You will be receiving your letter within a few days, and can schedule a pool closing on the form provided. 

To be sure that your pool is closed correctly, and in a timely manner, please follow these pool closing guidelines: 

1) Have all water pumped off of your pool cover
2) Have power turned on to your pool equipment
3) Have water temperature of pool set at a minimum of 65 degrees
4) Have winter cover on your pool deck or nearby so our technicians have it available for installation (only applicable if you have a winter cover)
5) Please unlock gates to pool area for easy access of our technicians

 Many customer ask us: “When should I close my pool?”

Our answer depends on two things:

1. The weather- if we experience a mild weather pattern for the fall, many customers don’t mind keeping their pool open until the middle of October.  In this case it is important to keep your pool water circulating during the evening hours  in the event that it happens to fall below freezing overnight.  If it becomes unseasonably cold in the early fall, many customers are likely to have their pool closed right after the Labor Day holiday weekend.

2. Energy Savings-  Obviously, the cooler it gets outside the more you have to run your pool heater.  Some customers don’t mind paying the extra cost to extend their swimming season into the late fall months.  Also keep in mind that you will have to run your pool pump longer to ensure water is constantly circulating through the pool and equipment.

**Keeping you pool or spa open all winter is not recommended.  We have seen customers try and keep their equipment running throughout the winter months and the risk is usually too great.  Any sort of power failure or tripped circuit breaker will shut down the electric to the equipment- and it only takes a few minutes for water to freeze when exposed to the harshest of Midwest winters.**

The farther the fall, the larger the sound.  It makes logical sense that Niagara Falls is louder than a water fountain, yet both sources produce the sound of running water.  Make sure the water fall you select is proportionate to the size and environment of the rest of your backyard.  A 10′ water fall sounds great, but may not be the best fit for a 12×20 swimming pool.  Conversely, adding just 2 deck jets to a 16′x40′ pool and spa with a pergola and 1200 sq/ft of deck space may not be appropriate either.  The water feature’s size and sound should match the overall scope and esthetic of the project.

1. Turn off the heater:  Most pool heaters require a high volume of water to be running through them in order to operate properly.  Using a manual vacuum can restrict water flow and cause damage to your heater.  Make sure the filter pump is primed and in high speed before turning the heater back on.

2. Fill vacuum hose with water:  After assembling the vac head and hose to the pole, submerge the entire hose in the pool to fill it completely with water.  Another easy way to do this is to hold the other end of the vac hose up to a return jet in the pool.  Once the vacuum head stops bubbling air it will rest on the bottom of the pool.  Now you can insert the hose into the skimmer line without sucking air through the pump.

3. Adjust equipment valves for better suction:  On a typical equipment setup there is a valve on the filter pump that controls the amount of suction on both the skimmer line and floor/wall drains of the pool.  Once you have hooked up the manual vacuum to your skimmer line you can adjust the amount of suction on the vacuum by adjusting the valve at the equipment.  Make sure you don’t turn off the wall/floor drain completely.  The vacuum will restrict water flow through the equipment and the pump will  eventually cavitate if this happens.  Only close off the wall/floor drain valve until your hear the pump start to hesitate, then back off just a little bit.

4. Work the vacuum aross the width of the pool:  This may just be a personal preference, but I find that starting in the shallow end of the pool and vacuuming a section of the width of the pool rather than going the length is much easier.  This way you can make sure you don’t miss any spots in the middle.

5. Remove the vac hose from the skimmer first: This is an important step that prevents sucking air through the skimmer and filter pump.  Make sure to always keep the vacuum submerged in the water and never pull it out before first disconnecting from the skimmer first.

One indicator you will need to notice regularly is the pressure gauge on your cartridge filter.  This tells you how much back pressure is being created by the system.  As your filters get dirty, the pressure goes up.  Once this pressure reaches 10 lbs higher than normal operating pressure, you know it’s time to clean the filters.  After cleaning the filters, you can reset the ‘clean’ dial on the gauge- the ‘dirty’ indicator will point to 10 lbs higher than ‘clean’.

 So when is it time to REPLACE the filters completely? When the pressure does not lower after cleaning. 

Typically, you will get 3-5 seasons out of your cartridge filters before needing to replace them.  Just make sure to keep up with cleanings throughout the summer.

Lately I have noticed several articles printed in local newspapers and in online sources that talk about the Virginia Graeme Baker act of 2008 and how it relates to swimming pool safety.  The law is intended to protect swimmers at a public pool  from entrapment due to equipment suction.  For details of this law and its requirements please visit HERE.

Many customers have asked about this law and how it relates to the RESIDENTIAL swimming pool industry.  Here are are few things to keep in mind when considering the safety of your backyard pool.

 The Virginia Graeme Baker act (VGB) does not currently apply to residential swimming pools at the national level. only public swimming pools are required to comply.  However, some local municipalities may enforce portions of the law for backyard pools as well.

Very often customers will ask me if I think it’s necessary for them to hire a pool service company to maintain their fiberglass swimming pool and equipment.  As with most things in life, the answer is not always short and easy.  Your lifestyle, available free time and how you use your pool are all factors to take into account. Here are a few things to consider before making the decision.

 1. How much time are you willing/able to put into your pool?

Some people think that as long as the water is clear, everything is working perfect in their fiberglass swimming pool.  Daily chemical checks can get neglected if a homeowner is not aware of the necessary water chemistry balance needed.  This process can take just a few minutes a day to test and adjust the chemicals in your pool water.

2. How often do you use your pool?

Are there always family gatherings and parties in your backyard and pool?  If so, keeping up with routine maintenance is crucial.  As more people get in the pool, so does the demand for sanitation and circulation of your pool water to stay clean and healthy.  Conversely, if you are a homeowner who rarely uses their pool, or are not home very often, pool maintenance  may be overlooked or ignored.  Not only chemical balancing, but vacuuming and filter cleanings need to take place at regular intervals to keep your pool and equipment in perfect running order.

3. Do you have a salt water system?

If you are using a chlorine generation system, it is crucial that the cell be cleaned on a regular basis.  Mineral deposits will build up on the cell over time and will eventually prevent the system from producing the chlorine necessary to sanitize your pool water.  Manufacturers recommend acid-washing the cell every 3 months.  Also, using a chlorine generator tends to make the pH of pool water drift higher, causing calcium buildup on the floor and walls of your pool.  It is important to keep the pH within an acceptable range to ensure your equipment runs efficiently and lasts a long time.  Check out this article for more information on adjusting the pH of your pool water.

1. Take a look at your Plat of Survey

The plat of survey is a document showing the exact location of your home, property lines, building setback lines, utility easements, flood plains, or any other special feature unique to your property. In general, you cannot install your pool equipment beyond any of these setback lines.  If you’re currently in the research phase of buying a new pool it is essential that you have a copy of your plat of survey to give to your sales representative. 

 2.  City, Village, or County Building Codes

As a general rule your pool equipment must be a minimum of 10’ from the water’s edge of the pool.  If you’re installing a heater with your pool (98% of our clients in Illinois do) you need to consider the distance between any windows and the exhaust vent on the heater.  Most municipalities require a 4’ minimum distance between the pool heater exhaust vent and any windows or window wells on the home.  For any other specific codes regarding pool equipment location you can contact your sales representative or your local governing municipality.

 3.  Association Requirements

These days many home owners associations have specific requirements as to the location of the pool equipment.  For instance, some associations won’t allow it on the side of your house.  Other associations want to make sure it is a certain number of feet off of your property line.  If you’re currently in the research phase of buying a new pool we highly recommend getting a copy of any association requirements prior to meeting with any sales representative. 

4.  Ease of Access

 Make sure the equipment will be located in a place with easy access as well.  If you purchase a remote with your pool you won’t be spending as much time at your equipment pad, but you will still want it to be in a reasonable place for maintenance and service.  If possible we recommend keeping your equipment within the fenced area of the pool.  This too will make it much easier to access your pool equipment.  If it’s not possible for the equipment to be installed within the fence area we highly recommend adding a gate close to the pool equipment.

 5.  Think About Noise

When you are deciding where to place the pool equipment, keep in mind the noise factor! Even with new variable speed pumps or 2 speed pumps the pump noise can be a nuisance if you’re equipment is too close your pool or any entertaining area around you pool.  If possible you also want to avoid installing the pool equipment right outside of a bedroom or any room of the house that is often used.

pH LEVELS ARE CRITICAL TO THE CLAIRTY OF YOUR POOL WATER AND LONGEVITY OF YOUR POOL EQUIPMENT.

By far the most important factor in keeping the overall health of your pool is the pH, or degree of acid or base in the water.  pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14 with 7 being neutral. 

Pool water pH is best kept in the 7.2 to 7.8 range.  When pH remains below 7.2, the water is considered to be corrosive and can damage metals in the equipment such as heat exchangers or lights.  It is also more difficult to keep chlorine in the pool because it becomes much less stable and is consumed faster than would be used at normal pH levels.

Keeping the pH higher than 7.8 will increase the tendency to form scale or cloudy water.  Calcium is an unstable mineral and when pH is high, the calcium has a hard time dissolving in the water.  High pH will also reduce chlorine effectiveness resulting in the need to maintain higher chlorine levels to achieve proper sanitation. Be aware that using a salt water chlorine generator will naturally increase the pH of your pool water and will need to be adjusted more frequently than when using stablized chlorine.

If pH levels are low, sodium carbonate (pH Up) is added to raise the pH.  If the pH is high, ph Down is used.  pH Down comes in two forms: liquid acid (muriatic acid) or dry acid (sodium bisulfate).

By keeing a close watch on your swimming pool pH levels, you will have a more enjoyable, safer, and easier to maintain environment in your backyard! In the Spring of 2009, we installed a fiberglass pool designed and built by Signature Pools. We moved from Los Angeles to Chicago several years ago. Our home in Los Angeles had a beautiful pool which served as a family gathering destination. Our children literally grew up in that pool and we missed having it terribly. After we moved to Chicago we tried in vain to recreate that family experience – at one point we installed a spa, but it was never the same. And now that our older children have grown, we have adopted two young children. Our younger children spent the entire summer in our new pool last year! We know in our hearts that we have finally recaptured that special focal point for our family.

Before we installed our pool, we researched several companies and types of pools. We selected a fiberglass shell because of its durability, beauty and ability to withstand the elements. During the proposal process, Todd Emmerson – Signature’ Sales Manager – was by far the most helpful to us as we considered various designs, styles and sizes. The Company and its staff were incredibly professional and helpful throughout the entire process – from design through permitting, construction and set up. The project was done on time and within budget. And Signature was great at communicating with us all through the entire process.

The actual construction went very smooth and much quicker than I had anticipated. One thing that caught me by surprise was the toll the installation took on our yard. I knew the yard would get torn up, but until you experience it firsthand you are not prepared. Regardless, Signatures’ crew was extremely careful, and the safety of my family was paramount to them. They also did an outstanding job cleaning up at the end of each day and made sure to put things back to its original state as much as possible upon completion.

Once the pool was installed, Jim Gavula spent a great deal of time teaching us how the equipment worked and how to care for our new pool. We called Jim several times with a lot of questions and he was always patient and very helpful.

Signature Pools and its staff were phenomenal! We love our new pool and expect to get many years of enjoyment from it with our children – and hopefully our grandchildren at some point in the future.

One of the most exciting advancements in residential swimming pool technology has been the development of salt water chlorine generators.  This type of system works on vinyl and concrete pools but is expecially effective on fiberglass swimming pools and makes them even easier to maintain.  These systems are used as a replacement to an in-line chlorine feeder that sanitises the pool water. But, as with anything ‘new and improved’, there are pros and cons to the products and a few common misconceptions.  Here are a few things to keep in mind when deciding which kind of sanitation to use on your fiberglass swimming pool.

 Chlorine Feeder: Cons

-Uses processed chlorine tablets that dissolve into your pool water

-A manual hand valve is used to control amount of chlorine put into the pool

-Chlorine may cause unpleasant odor, uncomfortable skin and eyes, and faded bathing suits

-Tablets must be added to unit continually throughout the season

Chlorine Feeder Pros:

-Chlorine is being added to the pool as long as filter pump is running

-Unit does not need to be cleaned or serviced throughout the season

Misconception: Chlorine feeders are expensive  because the tablets need to be replaced all the time.

Truth: A typical fiberglass swimming pool owner in the Midwest will spend between $100-$200 for a year supply of chlorine

Salt Water Chlorine Generators: Pros

-Chlorine is produced in its natural state and added into the water.

-No detectable taste, odor, or discomfort on skin.

-Chlorine level is controlled electronically

Cons:

-Salt level in the pool must be maintained within a certain range in order for unit to produce chlorine

-Cell must be acid washed several times a year to remove mineral deposits

-Chlorine is only produced when pump is in high speed

-Cell can deteriorate over time and will need to be replaced

-Stabilizer must be added to pool water to help prevent chlorine burn-off from sunlight

Misconception: Chlorine generators provide a completely automated system and no other chemicals need to be checked in the swimming pool.

Truth:Even though chlorine is produced by the cell, all other chemicals- pH, Alkaline, Stabilizer etc- need to be tested and regulated manually.

The decision is ultimatly up to the customer to decide.  We at Signature Pools highly recommend salt water generators to our clients because of the ease of use and resulting water condition of the pool.  However, these systems are not for everyone and do not replace the need for regular chemical checks.  If you have any questions about chlorine generators or in-line feeders, please feel free to contact Signature Pools and Spas at 630.845.1145.

This past week we have received several calls from customers asking about their pool pumps. In many cases they are not able to prime the pump completely or it looses prime when turned off. Here are a few things to look for if you come across this issue yourself.

1. Pump Lid- Make sure the lid for the pump is seated correctly and tightened all the way. Also check and see that the gasket between the lid and pump housing is in place and lubricated. A damaged, worn, or misaligned lid or seal can cause the pump to suck in air- preventing a full prime.

2. Skimmer and pump basket-check both the basket in the skimmer and inside the pump housing to make sure they are sitting correctly in place. A skimmer basket should align flush to the bottom of the skimmer pot. The pump basket should always be seated in the bottom of the pump. Many pump manufacturers such as Jandy and Pentair have a notch in the top of the basket that lines up with a grove inside the pump.

3. Water Level- make sure the water level is high enough in your pool. If it’s too low, air can be sucked through the skimmer and into the pump. Over time, this air can damage your pool equipment.

4. Loose pump union- check the threaded plumbing on the front of your pump. A loose union fitting may be allowing air to leak into the pump. Make sure to also check that the gaskets between the union fittings are also seated correctly and in place.

Not exactly….

Many pool owners have a misconception about what their chlorine generator (salt system) actually does.  Here are a few ground rules to keep in mind when maintaining your system.

1. Salt Level:  Make sure the NaCl (salt) is at the proper level in your pool water.  This measurement is made in parts-per-million (ppm) and should normally range between 2700 ppm and 3400 ppm.  Your pool equipment should have either a light indicator or internal digital salt tester to let you know if the level is correct.  If you have doubts about the accuracy of the equipment, use an independent testing agent to verify the results.  An easy test strip available from your local pool supplier will do the trick.  I personally like the AquaCheck brand for ease of use.

2.  System Diagnostics:  Once you verify the proper salt level in your pool water, you may want to run a quick diagnostics check of the salt cell to make sure it is running properly.  Most chlorine generator systems have a diagnostic mode that will measure the current that is running through the cell.  This will indicate whether or not the system is functioning properly.

3.  Clean the Cell:  Over time, calcium and other minerals will collect on the internal fins of the salt cell.  By cleaning the cell with an acid solution you will boost and extend the performance of the chlorine generating system.  Refer to your owners manual and manufactures’ recommendations for this process because every system is different.

 ALWAYS USE CAUTION WHEN HANDLING ACID AND OTHER POOL CHEMICALS!

4. Test your chemicals:  Many people think that having a chlorine generator means they don’t have to worry about chemicals for their pool AT ALL.  This is simply not true!!!  Staying on top of pH, Alkaline, and Stabilizer will greatly enhance the performance of your chlorine generator.  If these other levels are out of balance you may not be producing enough chlorine to safely sanitize the pool water.

The dealer conference also consists of an awards presentation for the best pools built the previous pool season. This year Signature Pools was honored to be awarded in two of the five categories. We were awarded with the Best Roman Model pool for a beautiful pool that we designed and built in Vernon Hills, IL last season. This job consisted of a Roman 19 model pool in the outback blue color finish, an automatic pool cover, 2 deck jets, a 2′ SunDek border around the pool, with the remainder of the patio being Yorkstone Pavers from Unilock. This was a challenging job due to the size of the yard, existing landscaping and playground, and the homeowners desire for a large area of grass to remain for two young children, but the team at Signature Pools pulled it off again.

We were also the winner of the Overall Category (Leisure Pools – Pool of the Year) for a stunning backyard transformation we designed and built using a Grand Elegance model pool in St. Charles, IL. The pool was finished in the Australian Blue Aquaguard gelcoat. It also has a large limestone patio, pegola, outdoor fireplace, automatic pool cover, and plenty of entertaining areas for large social gatherings. This same pool is also currently a finalist for the 2010 Master of Design Awards. The Master of Design award is one of the most prestigious awards given yearly in the swimming pool industry. Last year we were awarded a Master of Design award for a beatiful fiberglass pool/ spa combination in Yorkville, IL. Not so fast!!  Before you jump in the water for the first time this season, there are a few things to check with the swimming pool equipment and water chemistry.  Here are some good tips to remember to ensure your swimming season is relaxing, enjoyable, and low maintenance. 

1. Clean Your Filters- when the pool is first started up for the season, there is plenty of debris in the water that is now being circulated through the pool equipment and cartridge filter.  By giving the filters a good washing at the beginning of the season, you will have clearer water more quickly, and allow for proper filtration of the water.

 2. Test Your Chemicals- this is an important step to remember.  Your pool was most likely ‘shocked’ with chlorine the day it was opened and started up.  This water treatment will sanitize the swimming pool for a short period of time, but you will need to make sure chlorine levels are maintained throughout the season.  Also make sure to check the pH, alkaline, and stabilizer levels of your pool water.  If you have a chlorine generator (salt system) make sure the salt levels in your pool water are at the proper levels.

 3. Vacuum Your Pool- this one might be a no-brainer, but keep in mind that debris in the water has settled to the bottom of the pool over the winter and needs to be vacuumed out.  Make sure to clean out the pump after every vacuuming to clear any larger materials that are caught in the basket.

 4. Clean Your Auto-Cover- use a garden hose to spray out the tracks and guides of your auto-cover.  This will help keep the cover operating smoothly.  You can also use a pool brush and water to lightly scrub off the vinyl cover material of any dirt or debris that has collected over the winter.

 5. Maintain Proper Water Level- this is an ongoing maintenance check throughout the swimming season, but it’s good to get in the habit of checking your water level right away.  Keep the water line about half way up the skimmer box on the pool.  If the water level is too low, you may be sucking air into the pump and could damage the equipment.  Turn off the skimmer and fill the pool to the correct level before turning it back on.

After spending an afternoon with Todd Emmerson (Sales & Design Manager) and going over all the many questions and options it was a very easy choice to move forward with Signature Pools. That was 4 years ago.

When I initially started to look at company options I was not going to be fooled by fancy marketing or a big name company. I was diligent in my approach and decision making. Not only did we want a specific plan/layout for our backyard but also specific color and design of acid washed concrete. I also wanted a company that cared about customer service and I have received that in spades from Tom McNelis (owner), Todd Emmerson, and the rest of the staff at Signature Pools.

Our swimming pool has been so low maintenance and has turned out to be something both fun and valuable for our whole family. Truthfully, Signature Pools has gone out of their way and continues to this day to make sure that we have a positive experience.

Several months ago we announced that Leisure Pools was working on a brand new pool model called the “Grand Riviera”.  Our team at Signature Pools just wanted to take a few minutes to update our future customers who are looking for a deep end pool on the status of this new model as well as show you a few recent pictures of the progress.  You can see the beginning stages of the pool by clicking here:  www.signaturepoolschicago.com/blog/2010/01/04/leisure-pools-announces-new-model-for-2010-the-grand-riviera.

The good news is that the plug for the pool is almost complete.

Upon completion of the plug the mold will be built  and then finally the actual pool shells can be produced.  As you can see from the pictures, the Grand Riviera will be one of the largest free form fiberglass pools ever produced.  With dimensions of 40′ x 16′ x 8′ it will be one of the most innovative and stylish deep end pools in the industry and the only 8′ deep swimming pool in the United States available with the industry leading Aquaguard Gelcoat.  The pool will also come with a modified version of the very popular family play bench available on the current Riviera models.  Due to the size of this pool the steps have been moved to the center of the shallow end as opposed to the side of the pool.  This small change gives the pool a truly grand entrance.

This past June one of the best things happened. I put in a fiberglass pool by Signature Pools. I have wanted a pool for a very long time and had done a lot of research on the type of pool I wanted. Once I decided it was going to be a fiberglass pool then it was a matter of finding the very best company to build it. After talking with several companies Signature Pools won my vote due to their knowledge, experience, confidence in their pools, and their consideration for my concerns. Todd Emmerson (Sales Manager) was awesome during the purchasing and planning phase. He listened very closely to my ideas and what we were looking for in the pool as part of the landscape plan and put it together and made it happen. The 3D computer program they used was unbelievable – it showed me exactly what my new pool would look like with our existing house and landscaping. Todd also did not just sell the pool and disappear. He was still available when needed to answer my questions.

Once the pool arrived and the crew started it was unbelievable how quickly things happened. Tom McNelis (President) and the whole crew are the greatest guys. Our yard is very important to us and tearing it up was very stressful but the guys are so good at what they do installing these pools that the mess was minimal. The guys really went the extra mile to help fix the mess that was made due to the three inches of rain we had three days prior to the start of construction. The process was so quick that within four hours the pool was filling with water and within twenty four hours the concrete decking around the pool was finished and most everything was ready to go. Within a few days Jim Gavula (Permit and Job Coordinator) had the pool crystal clear and swim ready. I could not have been more pleased with everyone on the Signature Pools team!

With the salt water system my pool has basically no maintenance. I love telling people who say pools are so much work – Not Mine! Just some vacuuming and water testing is all the work the pool has caused – little to none. Even if we cannot get in the pool just sitting by it is such a great experience. Our yard is back to normal and we now have the luxury of a pool in our own private yard. I don’t for one second regret any part of putting in a fiberglass saltwater pool and have told many people it’s the only way to go and that Signature Pools is the best at what they do!

The Mid-America Pool & Spa Show will take place this year January 20 – 21, 2010 in St. Charles, IL.

While browsing through the seminars being offered this year I found one that caught my eye and if you’re currently researching or buying a swimming pool it should catch your eye too. The words I noticed were from a seminar entitled, “When Good Liners Go Bad”.

Here is the description given for this seminar:

Attendees will learn how to diagnose what is wrong with a liner and how to address the issue with their customer. Seminar discussion will include what problems can arise after liner installation and whether the issue is under warranty. Topics will include; wrinkling, leaking, fading, staining, dry rot, split seams, and customer expectations of how long a liner should last.

Keep in mind that this class is being offered by and taught by one of our country’s largest suppliers of inground vinyl liners and not from a concrete/gunite pool company or a fiberglass pool company. This class description spells out perfectly what we’ve been teaching the past 10 years about vinyl liner pools and why fiberglass pools are so superior. I’ll sum up for you here what this class really says about purchasing a vinyl liner pool:

1) You will have problems with your liner
2) You should hope that the company you purchased it from has been trained in how to address the situation with you
3) Problems can/will arise after liner installation
4) Some problems are not under warranty
5) Problems include wrinkling, leaking, fading, staining, dry rot, and split seams
6) Customers buying a liner should lower their expectations on how long a vinyl liner will last

The “Grand Riviera” will be the largest pool built in the Riviera series. In 2007 the Riviera line was introduced and was available in both a 34′ x 15′ x 5′ 11″ as well as a 30′ x 15′ x 5′ 8″ model. The first Riviera models have been very well received across the country and we here at Signature Pools have built many of these pools since it’s original release. The “Grand Riviera” will only add to the success of the Riviera line.

During 2009 our team at Signature Pools installed Riviera model fiberglass pools in several cities throughout Illinois including Addison, Hinsdale, Plainfield, South Barrington, and Seneca. The Grand Riviera will be a great addition to the Riviera line for customers looking for one of the largest free form fiberglass pools with 8′ depth available. The Grand Riviera will be available in any of the four exclusively licensed Aquaguard® gel coat finishes offered by Leisure Pools.

The much anticipated Grand Riviera is currently in the mold development process. This process begins with forming a plug for the pool. The plug is essentially a perfectly built model of the pool made out of wood. Once the plug is complete a mold is then built based off of the plug. Upon the mold being completed the pool will then be ready for production. We are anticipating the pool to be ready for production by early spring and are currently accepting orders for this incredible new pool!

1. Why we chose to build a fiberglass pool:

~After a year of research we decided to build a fiberglass pool due to the quality of the product.  We love how fast the pool was put in and it is really nice to not have to worry about getting “scratched” in the pool as you do with a gunite/concrete pool. We also love having our private oasis in the backyard and not having to go to various waterparks with hundreds of other people.

Today we would like to take a moment to explain the advantages and disadvantages of building a swimming pool at various times of the year in Illinois. Many customers are concerned about schedules, length of construction, and backyard disruption when deciding when to build a fiberglass pool.

Spring: Just as the snow and wind lifts from the midwest, many people consider installing an inground pool before the hot weather forces them back into air conditioned houses- or worse yet, the public swimming pool…surrounded by hundreds of fellow water-seekers sitting too close, and screaming childeren all around.  This is a great time to start construction of an inground fiberglass swimming pool because it insures that you will be able to take full advantage of the warm summer weather. Signature Pools’ schedule is not typically booked for the entire year in spring, so you will be able to get a spot for installation before it really heats up. The disadvantage to starting a project in ths springtime is that the ground tends to be a bit softer. This means that the digging of the pool is a bit easier but more messy. Our crews are as careful as possible when excavating and preparing your yard for the pool, but expect some tire ruts and mud through the construction access area.

Summer: The summer months in the midwest remind us all to jump into a pool, splash around with friends, and soak in the sun. Since the summer heat can seem unbearable at times, it’s the most likely time for customers to call us and say “I want a pool….yesterday! Seriously, when can you start?!?” We hear it all the time and understand completely. The advantage to building at this time of the year is that the need is immediate. People most appreciate their pool when they realize they can’t live without it! The only disadvantage to this season is scheduling. Obviously Signature Pools is most busy through the summer months, so it can be a difficult time to get your own pool built right away. Also keep in mind that buiding permits for your pool project can take up to 2-4 weeks with the village and may delay the start of construction. These permits are typically included in the purchase of your pool but MUST be obtained by our office before we can begin construction.

Fall: As the leaves change and a breeze rolls in from the north, many people are not thinking about swimming…but what about a hot tub? The fall season is a great time to relax in your very own therapeutic spa or hot tub. Signature Pools offers a variety of inground spas that are perfect for relaxing evenings. Swimming Pools are also built in this time, as people would like construction to be completed before the winter months, and the pool ready to jump in right away in the spring. Disadvantages to this time of year depend on the weather. Signature Pools can actually install fiberglass pools year-round, but the fall months present a few challanges; heavy rains, freezing tempatures, and bitter cold may get in the way of construction schedules. But for the most part fall is the perfect time to install a fiberglass swimming pool. Our work load is not as hectic and you’re probably not desperate for us to finish the project in time for a Thanksgiving dinner pool-side.

Winter: Believe it or not, winter is the time when potential customers should be doing the most research and contacting pool builders for information and pricing. Because the winter will slow construction for a few months, our staff has the opportuninty to design and consult with customers without the pressure of a 1-2 week deadline. Building permits are most easily obtained in the winter months because villages are not as busy with other construction projects. Having many decisions and choices made over the winter makes the construction process go much smoother (and quicker) once the weather clears. The only disadvantage to the winter is that the weather prevents us from pouring the concrete patio area around your pool. Once the warmer temperatures come back (usually in the early spring) we are able to complete this step and finish the project.

At least once a year, Signature Pools is approached by a homeowner asking to have their old, damaged pool replaced. In some cases our clients are simply tired of the maintenance and upkeep of a vinyl or concrete pool; other pools are completely un-useable and eyesores in their backyard. In either case, we are happy to consult with these customers, evaluate the condition of their existing swimming pool equipment, and design a plan to transform the backyard into a family oasis and gathering place.

The project below, located in Addison IL, started with an old, damaged vinyl liner swimming pool. The homeowners wished they could have a place for the entire family to enjoy, and called in Signature Pools and Spas to re-design and construct the space. This is what the existing vinyl liner pool looked like when we showed up.  You can see the wrinkles in the vinyl and how the walls are collapsing into the pool.  Also notice how dirty the liner gets over time.  No amount of scrubbing will bring back the original color to the surface.  This pool is completely useless in its present state.

Once the old vinyl pool is removed, workers prepare the excivated site, remove any more necessary dirt, and set the sand base for the fiberglass pool.  Great care is taken to make sure this base is constructed to exacting standards.

The fiberglass pool shell is carefully set into place on the sand base and immediately filled with water.  Sand and stone is then backfilled around the outside of the pool.  Later, concrete forms will be placed around the pool to form the pool deck and secure the pool into place.

Once concrete is poured the forms are removed from the edges.  Here you can see the fresh concrete right after it is poured.  Only a few more days and this project is complete.

Final touches are added to the swimming pool area.  In this picture you can see the completed backyard transformation, including a water slide, textured concrete around the pool, and a large brick paver patio.

Today’s featured fiberglass swimming pool is a wonderful example of a backyard that has been transformed into a beautiful family retreat. The homeowner’s own design was incorporated into the layout and placement of each element. Every family member was considered in the design and there’s something special for everyone.

The inground swimming pool itself incorporates color changing lighting, giving the entire backyard a resort feel as the pool water changes colors. Other features include an upper patio area with built-in fire pit, (perfect for roasting marshmallows at night), a large outdoor seating room with a wrap-around couch, audio system, and flat screen TV. Adjacent to the lounge area is an outdoor bar for the adults to grab a refreshing beverage after swimming.

By working closely with the homeowners on the design of this space, Signature Pools and Spas was able to create not only a beautiful swimming pool area, but a backyard where the entire family can enjoy many different features that work together- providing the ultimate backyard retreat!

One of the most common, and simplest questions to answer about your in-ground swimming pool is how to keep it sparkling clean.  There are actually three components at play in the cleaning process:

Circulation- Make sure your pool equipment is properly circulating the water through the system.  Clean the pump basket regularly and make sure the pump is not drawing any air through the skimmer or a loose fitting.  Your filter pump is at the heart of the circulation process, and is what draws water out of the pool (through the skimmer and main drain), and discharges clean water back into the pool (through the return jets).

Filtration- As the pump is circulating water through the equipment, it passes through some kind if filtering system.  All of our pools at Signature Pools and Spas use cartridge filters to clean the water.  Making sure these cartridges are free of debris is a major component in maintaining crystal clear water.  Follow your manufacturer’s instructions and clean these cartridges several times a season.

Sanitation- The third and final component in maintaining a clear swimming pool is water sanitation.  Although there are many ways to kill bacteria, chlorine products are most commonly used in swimming pools to eliminate any biological organisms.  Use test strips or a chemical test kit to make sure you have the right amount of chlorine in the pool water.

In the design and development of the project, Signature Pools featured a Leisure Pools Elegance 33′ fiberglass pool with many additional features.  Laminar water features, a sheer discent waterfall over the spa, and fiber optic lights are just some of the touches that gives this project the ‘Signature Look’. 

Signature Pools is proud and excited to receive the recoginition, but would also like to congratulate the other contributers and winners in the various catagories.

 These three terms are all used to describe the same thing: natural chlorine generation using sodium chloride. As magical (or complicated) as this may sound this process of generating chlorine is just some basic chemistry put to work. Simply put, salt is added to swimming pool water and then broken into the two chemical compounds that make up the salt (sodium and chloride). The chloride is then released back into the water providing sanitation for the pool.

This process of breaking salt into its elements is commonly known as electrolysis. Inside the pool equipment is a ‘cell’ with several metal plates that are mildly charged with a positive and negative current. As the saltwater pass by the cell, the current causes a reaction to happen, breaking down the salt into its two chemical compounds (NaCl). The sodium is collected onto the plates, while the chloride is released back into the water.

This system of sanitation is a very popular alternative to the chlorine feeders of the past. Prior to the salt chlorination development, most people added chlorine tabs or ‘pucks’ to an in-line feeder in the pool equipment. As water flows past these pucks, they dissolve into the water providing chlorine to the pool. The disadvantage to this type of system is two fold:

1. You must remember to ‘feed the pool’ chorine on a regular basis. Customers with this type of chlorine delivery system must refill the tabs ever week to maintain proper sanitation levels in the pool.
2. You can taste, smell, and feel the chlorine. The reaction is exactly what you might expect- burning eyes, faded swimming suites, and the residual smell of chlorine on your skin once you get out of the water.

A chlorine generating salt systems does not have these problems. Chlorine is constantly being produced by the salt in the water and you only need to add salt once or twice a season. The only way to loose salt from the water is by adding fresh water to the pool. Salt cannot be “burnt off” by the sun like chlorine or otherwise evaporate over time. Only the addition of fresh water from rain or a garden hose will deplete the amount of salt in the pool. Secondly, because the chloride is produced in its natural state, there is no smell, taste, or feel of chlorine in the pool water. No more burning eyes or faded hair!

The only maintenance necessary on the salt cell is a cleaning every now and then. Just like the oil change reminder on many modern cars, the system tells you when it is time to clean the cell (typically once a month). Follow the simple instructions from the manufacturer for the cleaning procedure and you’re ready to get back to the pool!

 Families deciding to install an in ground swimming pool can face dozens of decisions in the process, but none is more important than deciding on what KIND of pool to build in the first place. You may be thinking- “What do you mean? I want an in ground pool, that’s all!” Well yes, that may be true, but the type of pool you choose to build today will impact your life for years to come.

The three most popular types of in ground pools are fiberglass, vinyl, and concrete. In the past many companies only dealt with building one type of pool, but with the rising popularity of fiberglass pools we have seen many concrete and vinyl pool companies either start building fiberglass pools exclusively or adding fiberglass pools to what they currently build. As you will see below all three of these pool types have advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s take a look at the three major categories of in ground pools and highlight the benefits and downfalls of each.

Fiberglass Swimming Pools: Fiberglass pools are constructed as one piece shells in an offsite factory controlled setting. The pools are then set into the excavated site in your backyard, back filled with sand and stone, and then finished with the patio of your choice (concrete, pavers, stone, etc.)

Advantages: Fiberglass swimming pools are generally less expensive than an equivalent concrete pool, but more expensive than vinyl. However, because there is no re-surfacing, re-plastering, or finish to re-apply on the pool, there are not any major maintenance expenses down the road. The saying “Do it once, and you’re done!” truly does apply to fiberglass swimming pools. Also, because the surface of the fiberglass is a non-porous material, algae cannot adhere to the pool walls and chemicals are not leached from the pool walls. Fiberglass pools always have steps and benches built into your shell in the same finish as the rest of your pool. Construction time is much quicker with a fiberglass swimming pool as well. It typically takes 1-2 weeks to build a fiberglass pool.

Disadvantages: Fiberglass pools are limited in size and shape. Fiberglass pools are available in sizes from as small as a spa all the way to approximately 40’ x 16’. Because fiberglass pools are built as a one piece pool they can be difficult to install at certain properties due to access restrictions.

Concrete (Gunite) Pools: Concrete Pools are essentially rebar walls with concrete “sprayed” on top to create the pool vessel. Plaster is then troweled over the concrete to give the final surface of the pool.

Advantages: Concrete pools can be built into any size or shape. If I wanted the letter ‘J’ for Jim built in my back yard- No Problem! Concrete pools can be designed to fit your exact length, width, and depth specifications. Steps and benches can be added almost anywhere you choose.

Disadvantages:

Concrete pools are the most labor-intensive type of pool to build, and in the mid west are generally the most expensive to build as well. Although a concrete pool may sound strong, think of any sidewalk or house foundation over time. Concrete always cracks- no matter what. Especially with the freeze and thaw cycles in the Midwest, concrete of all types is stressed and strained every season. Additionally, the plaster on concrete pools needs to be maintained and re-surfaced ever 7-10 years. This means some major costs down the road to keep your pool up and running. Plaster resurfacing can easily run into the $5000 – $10,000 range for residential pools. Also, the porous surface of the plaster allows for algae to grow in the crevices of the pool finish and leaches harmful chemicals into the pool. This means that you will constantly be adding even more chemicals to the water, trying to keep everything balanced. Construction time on a concrete pool is typically 10 – 12 weeks.

Vinyl Liner Pools: Vinyl pools are constructed of steel walls with a vinyl liner on top that acts as the surface of the pool.

Advantages: Vinyl liner pools are typically the least expensive type of in ground swimming pool. Also, you are able to construct a wide variety of shapes, sizes and depths in the construction process and match the vinyl material to fit the pool shape.

Disadvantages: Because of the lower initial cost, most customers do not realize that vinyl liner pools are actually more expensive to own in the long run. Over time the vinyl gets wrinkles, fades dramatically, pulls away from the pool wall, and can get tears in the material. Some customers have had good success with a vinyl liner pool, but the truth is that over time, every liner must be replaced. Furthermore, as with concrete pools, algae will form in the pores of the vinyl and makes it difficult to keep a vinyl pool clean. Chemical treatments are similar to a concrete pool, as are the costs associated with replacing the liner. Additionally with a vinyl pool built in benches are very rare and steps will not match the color of the rest of your pool. Construction time of a vinyl pool can take 6-8 weeks depending on the size and shape you choose.

As many consumers know, fiberglass pools have sky-rocketed in popularity over the past decade.  Here at Signature Pools and Spas we have installed over 300 fiberglass pools for satisfied clients in the Chicago land area and all over Illinois.  Part of being the leader in  the midwest  for fiberglass pool isntallation is our commitment to educating our customers on the ownership and operation of their very own Signature Pool!

 This season we have received a few phone calls from concerned fiberglass pool customers because they believe there pool is leaking.  Although this is a rare occurance, it is something that can happen from time to time for various reasons.   If you are experiencing slow water loss turn off the skimmer valve to the pool, allowing only the deep end floor or wall drain to circulate water. This will allow the water to safely drop below the skimmer box without sucking air into the pump and harming other equipment.

After a few phone calls and a visit from our service team we  have discovered some of the causes of water loss and would like to share this information with you.

You pool is TOO full! Yes, this can happen- if you fill your swimming pool above the center of the skimmer, water can leak out the back of the skimmer extension ring (between the concrete and the skimmer ring). To check, look inside the skimmer and see where the water has stopped. More than likely the water level stopped just below the skimmer extension ring. Filling the pool any higher will just cause the water to drain back to that point.

There is a gasket leaking by the equipment pad. Take a look on the concrete pad around your equipment. Leaky filters, pump lids, and gaskets all can cause a slow leak in the pool and will affect the water level. Tighten the filter plug, reset the pump lid, and check all other seals for failure. There is a gasket on the underside of the pump lid, a large ‘O’ ring between the upper and lower half of your filter, and gaskets on all the plumbing clean-out points. You can use a dab of Vaseline on the rubber gaskets to ensure a water-tight seal.

A water return line may be leaking. If you notice rapid water loss from your pool it may be caused by a leaking or detached return line. Water loss in this case is very rare but possible. The leak will usually be severe and happen very quickly (6″ or more per 24 hours). Shut off you pool equipment and contact a swimming pool service company to repair this problem.

A light niche may be leaking. Behind some of the larger pool lights is a ‘wet niche’ that allows the light housing to be removed for bulb replacement and service. The chord of the light runs through a small conduit opening in the back of the niche. Over time the sealant between the chord and the conduit can deteriorate and needs to be re-applied.  As with the return lines, leaking lights are not all that common, but an easy fix if you do have a ‘slow leak’.

Water is evaporating. In summer months the water level in you pool can drop quickly from sunlight evaporation and swimmer splash-out. Keep in mind that every time the pool is used, some amount of water is splashed out and the sun evaporates water. One of the greatest benefits of being a Signature Pool’s customer is the ability to choose from so many options for their in ground fiberglass swimming pool.  From tile to concrete colors, water features to covers, there are countless ways to personalize a swimming pool.

An auto-cover system is a great way to add a measure of safety to the pool area, along with retaining pool heat and keeping the water free of debris.  But to get the maximum life out of an auto-cover, pool owners should keep a few things in mind when caring for the cover system:

• Keep water and debris off the cover when it is closed.   Leave a pump in the center of your closed cover and direct rain water off the pool area and drain into the surrounding landscaping.  Too much water and debris can cause unnecessary strain on the cover material and components, and will shorten the life of the system.
• Always keep the tracks clean.  Inside the cover track is a rope that pulls the cover open and closed.  If the tracks and ropes get filled with debris, friction can cause a rope to break or a pulley to fail.  Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle on the end to remove any dirt, leaves, or other debris from inside the tracks.
• Never operate your cover if the water level in the pool is low.  The water underneath the cover helps to support its weight.  If the water is too low, the cover will strain to open and the motor can be damaged.
• Clean out the cover box.  The area that holds the motor mechanism and cover roll can collect dirt, leaves and debris over time.  Check inside the cover box and clean out anything that may have collected over time.  Also make sure any ground water is properly draining from the box.

It took me almost three years to make a decision on a backyard pool. I met Todd Emmerson in August of 2006 about halfway into this decision. As you know, there are many choices a consumer has when it comes to back yard pools. It took me the first year just deciding on whether to go with a built in fiberglass pool. I looked at all types and discovered fiberglass was the easiest of all to maintain and operate.

Back in August 2006, Todd was very professional giving me different ideas that would work in my backyard. My only regret is that it took me so long to decide.

In February 2008 I contacted Todd again and told him that I reached a decision. Signature Pools was the company that I would hire to install my fiberglass pool. We decided on a kidney shaped pool that fit our backyard. Todd Even offered to stop by and spray paint the outline of the pool to give us an idea of how it would look in the backyard. What an eye opening experience that was. The pool that we chose was not quite the right one for our situation. Todd immediately made a recommendation and painted that outline in the yard. What a difference that made. We were able to get the right pool at the right price.

The installation was quick and easy. Within two days the pool was full of water and concrete was ready to be poured. We officially opened the pool on Memorial weekend. The weather was great and the pool was heated to a comfortable 85 degrees. The kids have been in it ever since. Not a day went passed this summer without a pool full of friends and family having a great time.

I will never regret purchasing a fiberglass pool from Signature Pools. Todd Emmerson (sales manager) and Jim Gavula (permit and job coordinator) made the whole process as easy as possible. But I guess the biggest surprise was to see you, the President and owner of the company, out there working the machinery that very first day. You and your team gave my family and me a great summer in 2008 and for many years to come!

It’s that time of the year for Illinois swimming pools!- Signature Pools and Spas is in full swing with new construction, and many of our existing customers are reminded to clean out their cartridge filters and inspect their salt generator cells on the equipment. Although fiberglass swimming pools are the easiest in ground pools to maintain, it’s important to perform these tasks to get the most enjoyment out of your swimming season and keep your equipment running smoothly.

Dirt, leaves, suntan lotion and other debris collects in the pool filter and needs to be cleaned out every so often. Take a look at the pressure gauge on top of your filter to see if the operating pressure has risen to the ‘dirty’ mark. Even if the gauge has not, it’s a good idea to clean the filters several times a year. Low return pressure, heater problems, and chlorine generation is all affected when filters get too dirty. You can also extend the life of the filters by keeping them as clean as possible. This will save money in the long run by not having to replace the cartridges as often.

Another important maintenance tip is to keep your chlorine/salt generator clean. As the system breaks the salt water in to sodium and chloride, (the chemical make-up of salt), mineral deposits can collect on the generator cell and diminish its capacity to generate chloride and sanitize the pool water. Most chlorine generator manufacturers recommend inspecting the cell every month to insure there is no mineral build-up on the component. Using a mild acid wash will eliminate any build-up and enhance the performance of your equipment. Refer to you specific manufacturer’s instructions for further information on cleaning the cell.

By keeping these components clean, you are able to extend the life of your inground pool equipment and ensure water chemistry balance through the remainder of this season.

This year has brought lots of growth and change for Signature Pools.  One of the biggest developments has been the expanded product line from Leisure Pools.  This summer they introduced the Grand Elegance, the largest in their lineup of in ground fiberglass pools.  This season also brought more sales of Leisure Pools shells than ever before. Customers have seen the innovative designs, incredible color selection, and high quality construction of their pools.  Leisure Pools will soon be opening the worlds largest pool manufacturing plant to keep up with the US demand for their product.  This will also enable them to continually increase their selection of shapes.  We are looking forward to their new models in the summer of 2009.

We also are excited about our newly found relationship with Structure Studios software.  This application allows us to provide our clients with 3D designs.  Our clients can then visually ‘walk through’ their backyard to see  what the final product will look like.  Check back soon to see some before/after examples of this on our web page.

 The first picture is a pre-construction photo of the existing backyard.  From there we are able to take measurments of the property and use the plat of survey to duplicate a 3D model of the house and yard.  Then, elements such as the fiberglass pool, fire pit, even lawn chairs are added into the design.  Working closely with the client, the design professional is able to achieve the exact look desired by the homeowner.

The second picture is a finalized computer rendering of the project.  After many changes and tweeks to the original plan, this design is settled on before construction begins. 

The end result is the final picture in the series.  This is the actual finished product after construction and installation of the pool, along with all the landscape elements.

In other news, Signature Pools is excited about the heavy machinery just purchased. With a new six wheeler dump truck and crane, Signature Pools is prepared to excavate and set even more fiberglass pools in Illinois this year. Having this equipment owned and operated by our company is part of providing our clients with the best, most reliable, and most competitive services in the industry.

The first part of the day was spent learning about all the new products in development and improvements to the current cover systems being used. One such exciting addition was new flush-mounted lid that covers the mechanical components of the auto-cover system. This cover provides a cleaner look to that area of the fiberglass pool without drawing your attention away from the beauty of a backyard escape.

After the presentation, we were able to see a complete auto-cover installation from start to finish on a mock up pool shell. Technicians from Coverstar Central were available to answers questions and show the process in detail.

Many chemical distributers were also present at the expo, and shared insights into the specifics of chemical balance for inground fiberglass pools. Since chemical needs for swimming pools change based on region, the distributers were able to customize the information for the Chicagoland swimming pool market.

Overall, Todd and Jim consider the show was a huge success, and are now even more excited about the fiberglass swimming pool season here in Chicago.
